So recently I blogged about Denim, in its various forms, and one piece I particularly revered was the time-worn, but still much loved, denim jacket. And this got me thinking about the role that jackets play in our wardrobes…handy cover ups, practical weather defeaters, outfit-finishers…they are now so much more than just a purpose to stay warm, in a lot of cases, jackets and coats can be outfit dealbreakers-either pulling a look together, or simply being the misjudged cherry on top of your sundae-worst (I'm sure this never happens to ASOS customers!)
With this in mind, I had a little wander into the world of cover-ups. As a self confessed shopaholic, I have a wardrobe busting with a jacket for every occasion, so it seems. But whats hot right now, and whats worth investing in?
The buzzword on fashionistas lips right now is the 'trophy jacket.' This little number is something that screams eveningwear (think: sequins, embellishment, luxe fabrics like silks and velvet.) but the twist: you pair it with your daywear to pare it down to its basest level. The look: effortless, daytime glamour with the right amount of oomph, and not a drop of overkill. It's a fine line ladies (and gents!) so tread carefully to avoid looking like you're en route to a cocktail party….but get it right, and watch your fellow fash followers go green! I particularly like the Buddhist Punk checked silk biker jacket, which is luxe enough to wear with an LBD for an evening out but would also look fierce for day with a plain white tee, black skinnies and pumps. The Full Circle tie neck blouson silk bomber jacket is another example of a gorgeous fabric being used to turn something usually associated with eveningwear, into something bang on for day. Finally, the Soaked in Luxury tiered mac is a stunning piece- a classic shape in a gorgeous and on-trend metallic fabric, which will be a perennial style-saver for years, I predict. And a snip at £39, be quick ladies!
Another piece which I'm itching to get my hands on is the boyfriend blazer. I was a little slow out of the blocks on this trend-I'm quite small and so I was worried that I might be a) swamped by acres of fabric and b) mistaken for an attendee of the local college. However, I should have put my fears aside because these jackets are major, and once I'd cottoned on to how to wear them correctly (slouchy, sleeves rolled up, air of insouciance) I wondered how I could possibly have thought of giving this trend the cold shoulder! The first product on my hit list is the ASOS boyfriend blazer in grey (perfect shade, will go with everything) and I'm also loving the Vila turn up cuff Jersey Blazer-another stunning little number which, although tailored, is brought down a notch by the casual jersey fabric. This will become your 'wear-with-everything-how-did-I-live-without-it' purchase!
Of course, it looks like the denim jacket is here to stay, for the warmer months at least! I'm loving one in a western styling, in a rather fetching bleached out shade. Those of you who read my blogs will know that I NEED to get my hands on one of these to chuck on over a floral dress I've just bought…it just looks so chic and effortless, and perfect for making an 'evening' shape dress wearable for day. I love the Diesel pocket detail Western jacket for day, which will just get better with age and needs to be bashed up and worn in for the perfect look. I'm also coveting the Warehouse waterfall denim jacket as a complete statement piece and guaranteed traffic stopper!
Topically, its as if Wimbledon knew I would be jacket-blogging today…who saw Serena Williams' rather fabulous fluted hem double breasted mac jacket? In a stunning off white, it looked adorable against her gorgeous skin tone. Hardly practical though I'd say…surely its just asking for grass stains!? Nevertheless, the mac is a classic piece that will be a wardrobe staple for years-maybe pick one in a tan or dark shade, mind you, to avoid a sky-high dry cleaners bill!! Wear it with the belt knotted or bowed behind you…sizzling! ASOS have a great selection, and my top pick is the ASOS pique double breasted military mac, which is elegant enough to wear day in, day out, but has just a pinch of attitude which sets it apart from the others! A great mac for those of you who like something a bit less 'classic' in style is the ASOS floral print mac-fun, trendy and a gorgeous fit, and just a little less conservative than some of the others. The choice is yours!
We can't possibly forget the ultimate cover up for cooler evenings, of course-the leather jacket. What with fringing being so hot right now, (check out my blog on the subject if you fancy it) a hot tip for summer would be the fabulous fringed waistcoat by s'nob (ASOS do their own version too if you can't stretch to the £220 price tag!)
Leather looks great worn with skinnies and a band tee, but again, if you don't want to go too 'rock', reach for your florals and think about fabrics…a leather jacket is instantly glamorised, no matter how bashed it is, over a silk or chiffon day dress…mixing textures really is where its at, and gives a girlie outfit a whole new twist. A leather jacket is an investment, so choose a classic shape you will want to wear forever, because, get the fit right, and you probably will. The Patrizia Pepe leather jacket is a great example, as is the ASOS premium curved seam leather bomber. Pick a neutral colour (black, brown or tan are all good, though a dark red or midnight blue can also work really well)
So! Pick your style and get out there….work it!
