Style Essentials: Denim

Style Essentials: Denim

Something that I thought about quite frequently when putting together my capsule wardrobe was the amount of casualwear vs workwear I would need, and what I liked to wear at the weekends and during down time. I used to work for The Gap and as such, denim was integral to my working wardrobe then, so my days off were dominated by peg trousers or slim smarter trouser shapes rather than yet more denim-I was just bored of wearing it!

A few years later and I don't wear jeans to work anymore, so they definitely become something I look forward to choosing at the weekends. I have a total of 9 pairs, and some of them are more summer/winter appropriate than others. I thought in this post I would look at the styles that I rate the most and why I enjoy wearing them so much!

First up: the skinny jean. I remember seeing Kate Moss in a pair of grey skinnies with ballet shoes in the early 00's and thinking, 'that will never catch on' but how wrong I was! It was merely weeks before I had consigned my baggy skater jeans to the charity shop and replaced them with a pair of 'Baxter' skinny jeans from Toppers, which by today's standards, aren't that skinny a style at all! Now, I have two pairs of skinny jeans-one black and one blue. I wear the Binx style from Topshop (here) which are a raw hem, ankle grazer style, and are high on the waist but not up around your armpits like the Joni ones!

Another style that I really like, and one I probably wear the most frequently, is the girlfriend jean. My ASOS Thea jeans are the most perfect cut and are my favourite style of all my jeans; high waisted, slim but not skinny through the leg, these are universally flattering and easy to wear. I have them in blue denim and also a black pair I found on Depop. These are similar.

Wide legged jeans are something I haven't worn since the 90's and because I am short, I don't think that often they look right on me. However, a cropped wide leg is a different story-I have a pair from ASOS which are high waisted and raw hemmed. I helped them with the crop detail by cutting another couple of inches off the length, and they are great for summer with leather sandals and a tee shirt tucked in. These ones are similar.

Finally, I also love a straight leg jean. I've talked loads about my Levis pair, but I also have a couple of others from White Stuff of which I love the fit.  They are actually meant to be worn as cropped, but they are a lovely straight ankle grazer when worn rolled down. They come in a huge range of colours, too; I chose classic denim and also ecru which is lovely for summer with a breton stripe. Pick them up here.

What are your go-to denim styles?
