Ballerina Season

One of the things I look forward to about the spring is the opportunity to pack away my ankle boots and get my ballet flats back out.  I think a decent ballet pump is probably the mainstay of my shoe wardrobe - they go with everything and are so comfortable. They are so good for spring and summer, looking chic with jeans or cut off shorts alike and are flattering on the leg.

This season, the ballerina element of the flat has become more pronounced, with designers adding ribbons or ties around the ankle to replicate the look of a working ballet shoe. Miu Miu toughened up these feminine accoutrements with heavy black buckles which provides a definite juxtaposition in the style and even went so far as to offer mismatched ribbons which provide a quirky look.

If you want to switch up from the classic black ballerina, but want something a little more subtle, Spartoo have a huge range of flats in a multitude of colours, styles and finishes. I think a bright shoe can really help to add a zing of colour to a neutral look - red, for example, looks amazing with denim. You could even opt for a different finish to make your ballerinas stand out - patent or faux snakeskin are just a couple of the options to explore.

The one thing with a ballerina is that you can't really wear them in the rain - many's the pair I've ruined in such a way because they are ultimately quite soft and not really suited to hard wears, however, you can always have them resoled to give them a little more wearability. My favourite Chanel pair have been resoled and reheeled countless times - I really should invest in a new pair, but the trouble is once you've worn them in, they become like slippers and I can't bear the thought of replacing them!
