I feel that there's a constant search for the perfect red lipstick. I actually have the perfect red, which is absolutely ancient - I think it was my grandmothers. The perfect shade, which makes my teeth look about 8 shades whiter and my mouth look super symmetrical and (if I overline slightly) like I've had lip fillers (which I would never get because I don't think it would suit me, but it's good to even up my wonky mouth with makeup!)
I've tried lots of different ones since then, and not just red, either - hot pink is also a good option for a statement lip, but like a red, I've learnt that I need to pick a colour with a blue undertone. Warmer undertones tend to make my teeth look yellow, which is never a good look! I also like orange or coral, especially in the summer, again with that cooler undertone which is more flattering on my skintone.
