It's now April so it surely must be about time to get rid of the woolly tights and boots and embrace a bare leg and an open toe (or heel, or both) surely! I love an ankle boot of course but it gets to this point in the year when I just can't wait to start wearing some more summery styles and in keeping from last summer, the mule is set to be the sartorial summer shoe of choice this year, too.
I struggle with mules because I have quite narrow feet so I find them quite hard to keep on. I would love a pair of those Gucci style backless mules but all the ones I've ever tried have just been so uncomfortable - they look great when I'm standing still, but take a few steps and they either slip off, shoot forward so my heel falls off the back, or slip sideways so half my foot ends up on the pavement. As for running anywhere or trying to get somewhere in a hurry - forget it! I once ran for a train wearing a pair of Birkenstock Arizonas and the blisters that caused lasted for weeks!
A heeled mule, though, is a different story. Easier to keep on, because your weight is driving the foot forward, they are a smart alternative to a strappy sandal and look chic with trousers or midi skirts. I particularly love the split front trousers pictured here, I think they look great! This heel is way too high for me to consider, and I'm also not a huge fan of a stiletto heel, but a more granny suitable, block heeled mule is definitely a winner for me. Spartoo have a huge selection in stock; my favourites are from the Betty London brand and they include khaki strapped versions, flatform styles and easy-on sliders. Perfect for the whole summer!
